El Abra recibe importante reconocimiento internacional
Tras un proceso voluntario iniciado en septiembre, El Abra, filial de Freeport-McMoRan, se convirtió en la primera minera en Chile en obtener la importante validación internacional “Copper Mark”, que demuestra y garantiza las prácticas de producción responsable y la contribución a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de las Naciones Unidas.
El Abra obtuvo esta certificación junto a otras dos operaciones de Freeport-McMoRan: Atlantic Copper (España) y Cerro Verde (Perú), informó la Sociedad Nacional de Minería (Sonami). Además, la compañía ya ha iniciado el proceso en otras tres faenas.
“Copper Mark, desarrollado por la International Copper Association (ICA), es un reconocimiento a la forma en que Freeport-McMoRan opera, con minería responsable y sostenible, que no sólo se limita a la obtención de esta designación, sino que además compromete a cada una de las operaciones a la mejora continua a través del tiempo”, indicó el gremio minero.
Rubén Funes, presidente de El Abra, sostuvo que “recibimos esta designación con mucho orgullo, ya que, a través de una revisión externa e independiente, se ha demostrado que el cobre que producimos cumple con altos estándares de sostenibilidad, consolidando nuestro compromiso con la minería responsable”.
Copper Mark incluye más de 30 criterios de evaluación y es el primer y único marco internacional de garantía desarrollado específicamente para la industria del cobre. Para obtenerlo, El Abra fue evaluada de forma independiente en función de un conjunto integral de criterios ambientales, sociales y de gobernanza.
