Biden defiende retiro de tropas desde Afganistán

El presidente Joe Biden defendió este lunes la decisión de retirar, luego de 20 años de presencia, a las tropas estadounidenses de Afganistán, sin perjuicio de lo cual lamentó que este contexto haya favorecido una inesperada ofensiva y toma del poder por parte de los talibanes.

«Nunca hay un buen momento para retirarse», dijo Biden esta tarde, en una comparencia desde la Casa Blanca, en la que admitió que el avance talibán y la caída de Kabul «se desarrolló más rápidamente de lo que esperábamos».

Biden recordó el extenso y multimillonario apoyo militar y de capacitación entregado por Washington a este país en Medio Oriente. También dijo que Estados Unidos promovió el diálogo político del Gobierno del Ashraf Ghani con otros sectores, pero sin mayores logros.

«Las fuerzas de Estados Unidos no deben pelear una guerra que las fuerzas afganas no están dispuestas a pelear», afirmó Biden, que también afirmó que la misión norteamericana no era crear «una democracia unificada y centralizada», sino evitar los ataques terroristas contra suelo estadounidense.
